Selecting the right bearing for your application is the first step to getting the results you are looking for.

It’s unrealistic to expect a bearing to last forever and continue to spin extremely freely whilst withstanding all kinds of dirt, dust, water and other contaminants.

For over 99% of hobby applications a standard Abec 1 bearing will suffice. Using higher precision bearings like Abec 7 will make no difference to your hobby applications.

You will often find high precision Abec 5 and Abec 7 bearings being promoted for hobby applications like fishing reels, skating and remote control. The sites promoting high precision bearings for these applications are simply riding the current wave of misinformation. Don't fall for it. Save your money.

High precision bearings are used in applications such as dental handpieces, surgical instruments, aircraft instruments, tape guides and precision sound recording and editing equipment.

Most hobby applications damage bearings very quickly. Hobby applications are generally rough, vibratory and often dirty.

Two Simple Rules

If you want longer life from your bearings, use grease filled rubber sealed bearings.

If you want more freely spinning bearings, use oil filled metal shielded (or open) bearings.
